Qui sommes-nous

The W. P. Schmitz Foundation, created by Werner Peter Schmitz († 24.12.2008), was established in 1985 as a non-profit foundation for development. Its scope has expanded greatly in the course of many years of intensive work. In 1996, to meet the increased demands, Mr. Schmitz set up the Schmitz-Hille Foundation located in Thun, Switzerland. The Schmitz-Hille Foundation and the W. P. Schmitz Foundation maintain a joint administrative office in Düsseldorf. It is the declared aim of both Foundations to make an effective contribution to combating poverty and promoting understanding among the people of the world. To this end, the Schmitz Foundations work closely with the target groups on the ground and local project organisers, or in co-operation with other non-profit organisations with similar aims.

Every year more than 100 projects are planned, funded, organised and implemented. The particular target groups receiving our support include: Street children, orphans;young people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds; families with incomes below the poverty level; the homeless; the handicapped; the old and the sick; women suffering particular hardship.

With our projects, we, the Schmitz Foundations, were able to achieve significant improvements in the income and standard of living of the groups involved, for example:

• Resocialisation and reintegration of street children
• Setting up workshops to provide training schemes and employment for marginalised young people
• Building up savings and credit unions, microcredit institutions, natural credit systems
• Training girls and women in traditional crafts and modern careers
• Improvement and expansion of agricultural production and marketing to ensure the food supply and raise incomes
• Advice and education programmes (hygiene, health, dietary advice)
• Local water supply (well-drilling, drinking water supply, waste water disposal)
• Encouraging traditional crafts and handicrafts
• Agroforestry, tree nurseries and reforestation
• Improving living conditions in orphanages
• Caring for the homeless and feeding the poor
• Literacy courses for adults Road and bridge building
• Setting up and equipping workshops for the handicapped
• Promoting educational therapy work with the handicapped
• Village pharmacies and traditional medicinal plants

After prior agreement, we can offer an expert advice, give a lecture, communicate specialist information and arrange for new contacts in the field of our work.
