Qui sommes-nous
Osa Conservation (OC), formerly Friends of the Osa (FOO, is a nonprofit conservation organization committed to the preservation of the Osa Peninsula's globally significant biodiversity, by ensuring the maintenance, restoration and long-term viability of the ecosystems on and around the Osa Peninsula. OC was founded in 2003 and has offices in Washington, DC and Puerto Jiménez, Puerto Rico.
Our vision is to maintain a largely forested landscape surrounded by an intact coastal zone that protects Costa Rican wildlife on the Osa Peninsula and the Osa's unparalleled wealth of biodiversity while supporting sustainable human livelihoods.
Our Mission is to conserve the globally significant biodiversity of the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica.
We accomplish our mission through our three main program areas: Science, Land Stewardship, and Education.
Science:
• Our Evergreen and Greg Gund Memorial Fellowship programs support terrestrial and marine research through scholarships to local and international researchers.
• Osa Biodiversity Center: Facilities with access to 6,000 acres of high quality tropical ecosystems and extensive well-marked and georeferenced trails to conduct research and monitoring
• Sea Turtle Conservation Program: Long-term monitoring and protection of endangered sea turtles
• Offer technical support to those in the field and local communities in order to apply science to conservation
Land Stewardship:
• Build strong alliances with local, regional and international partner organizations
• Create private protected areas through direct land purchase, shared-use agreements and conservation easements
• Expand protected areas including the Osa National Wildlife Refuge (ONWR)
• Actively protect and manage land and refuge in conjunction with MINAET
• Restore degraded habitats focusing on riparian corridors with use of native species
Education:
• Provide progressive environmental education and training to future generations with a focus on local schools
• Enhance the scientific understanding of tropical ecosystems through hands-on educational activities
• Promote experiential learning through field trips to FOO research facilities
• Build local capacity through technical training requested by communities
