Qui sommes-nous
The American Indian Education Center (AIEC) is a tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization, opened in 1992, and an agency devoted to the cultural, educational, and socioeconomic enhancement of American Indians through the provision of programs and services that empower all Indigenous cultures represented in the State of Ohio, with the holistic goal of developing self-sufficiency, self-determination, and self-esteem among all community members.
With its wide variety of educational and social service programs, the staff of the AIEC strives daily to help the Native Americans of the community reach their potential in the areas of employment, educational attainment, self sufficiency and self respect.
On the AIEC staff, we have individuals who are able to make presentations on a wide variety of Native American topics and issues, including:
• historical perspectives on Native American life
• the government's treatment of Native Americans, including attempts at extermination, sterilization by the U.S. government until 1978, the reservation system, relocation (71% of Native Americans currently live off-reservation), and treaty violations
• contemporary issues among American Natives, such as health issues (i.e., 40% of Native deaths caused by tobacco, an 85% (epidemic) diabetes rate)
• Native American heritage and culture
• topics revolving around the American Indian Movement (AIM) from its inception in 1968 to present, Chief Wahoo
• spirituality among First Nations people
• sovereignty rights, and casino rights for Native Americans in Ohio
We also do mini-powwows with traditional Native dancers at your location.
Programs:
• Annual Christmas Party: an annual banquet for the community with toys and gifts for all the children
• Tutoring
• Native American Youth Council: a social and social service oriented group, directed by the young people of the Native Community
• Diabetes Testing: periodic testing conducted by healthcare professionals
• Housing Program: a home-purchasing training program designed to help people and families buy new or renovated homes with a low or no down payment
• Holloween Party
• Native American Families and Values Class: a family strengthening/communication program
