Qui sommes-nous
Hakikazi Catalyst is a non-profit, non-political and non-religious organisation, founded in 2000 and based in Arusha (Tanzania), committed to achieving social and economic justice.
We promote the rights of people to fully participate in the social, technical, environmental and economic decisions that affect their lives.
Our mission is to act as a local catalyst by facilitating participatory processes which empower marginalised people with knowledge about policies which effect their development and skills which enable them to engage constructively with government and other stakeholders to secure their social and economic rights.
Objectives
• To promote public education that creates knowledge and understanding of poverty issues and policies and raise the awareness of the poor about their social and economic rights and responsibilities.
• To facilitate processes of participation, transparency, and accountability that ensure choices and voices of poor communities are included in making decisions about key poverty reduction strategies.
• To promote sustainable livelihoods and capabilities through processes that foster constructive dialogue and actions between the poor and all levels of government on issues affecting income and capability poverty.
We work:
• By addressing their sense of powerlessness and hopelessness by helping them to understand the forces acting on their lives and livelihoods, and how to act upon them.
• Through information sharing that stimulates community based action and reflection.
• Cross-sectorally and with a holistic understanding of local, national and international, both historically and culturally.
Our Approach
• We pioneered in Tanzania, a model of designing, demystifying, disseminating and dialogue, through the use of simple language guides in English and Kiswahili to explain complex policy documents.
• We work to generate a common understanding of the implications of policy for livelihoods and local opportunities. This includes up-streaming community feedback into decision-making processes at local and national level.
• We actively participate in civil society networks at local and national level. We also network with faith based organisations, research institutes, academia and trade unions, as well as government and the donor community.
Hakikazi Catalyst operates three distinct programmes:
• The Zinduka Programme (Zinduka means wake up or be aware in Kiswahili): Knowledge and understanding for policy engagement
• The Community Governance Programme: Action for Accountability: Public education on development issues, through establishing Centres for Development, Learning and Action (CEDLA). Strengthening popular participation by involving people in discussions and competitions.
• The Community Livelihoods Opportunities Programme: Promoting accountability over natural resource management by empowering communities with knowledge and skills. Participatory action-oriented research to plan and enhance livelihoods opportunities, taking into account the impact of HIV/AIDS.
