Neighbourhood Environment Watch (NEW) Foundation is an environment focused nongovernmental organisation with a country office in Nigeria. NEW Foundation works to inspire collective action towards environmental governance that ensures a healthy and suitable livelihood. Our programs address governance failures that exacerbate environmental pollution, land degradation, poverty, and hunger and their impacts on vulnerable members of the communities we work with. gender mainstreaming and equity drives our programming and intereventions and leverages on diversity for impact.
Vision: We envision a human society built on the principle of environmental justice and social rights, where no one is excluded and all have equal access to resources and parity of opportunity.
Mission: Our mission is to inspire action and build a communal response to environmental and social justice. We work with individuals and communities to become active participants in democratic and inclusive governance, build knowledge, skills, and advocate for those with greater vulnerability.
Objectives:
• To increase awareness, promote human and environmental health and sustainable land management
• To build the capacities and voices of mining-impacted communities to know their rights and safeguard their environmental resources.
• Hold governments and corporations accountable for the utilisation of the public wealth and the promotion of integrity in personal and private conduct.
• Contribute to the reduction of the environment-induced disease burdens such as Malaria, viral Hepatitis and HIV AIDs through behavioural change advocacy.
• To promote access to water, sanitation and hygiene practices,
• To carry out interventions, research, advocacy, documentation and knowledge management in areas of NEW Foundation thematic focus.
Thematic Focus:
• Environment: Climate justice, Smart & Resilient agricultural Practices; Safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene promotion (WASH), Conservation.
• Human Rights/Natural Resources Governance: Human Rights advocacy; Natural Resources Governance; Transparency in the Extractive.
• Governance: Anti-Corruption, Budget Monitoring and Democracy,
Projects:
• Green Communities Reforestation Project: Neighborhood Environment Watch (NEW) Foundation aim to raise and plant 100,000 tree seedlings in four (4) communities of Ebonyi State this year.
• NEW Foundation partners with Global Rights & Centre LSD on Mining Rights: New Foundation, a national environmental NGO in continuation of its mandate to promote sustainable environment and empower rural communities, partners with Global Rights Nigeria and Centre LSD to build the capacity of mining host
• Reduction of Malaria Related Morbidity and Mortality in Ebonyi State: BCC/ Community Awareness and practice of malaria control and prevention in 84 Communities in Ezza North, Afikpo North and Afikpo South LGAs
• Comprehensive HIV Prevention and Behavioural Change Intervention for OSYs, TWs, PIs, & Women in Ebonyi State: 6585 persons reached with HIV prevention interventions using the MPPI; 138 Peer Educators trained to facilitate peer training / sessions,
• Water Sanitation and Hygiene Outreach
• Training on Climate change mitigation and Agro-forestry. supported by UNDP-GEF/SGP Nigeria
• Reforestation of 80 Hectares of Degraded lands at Enyigba/Edda communities in Abakaliki LGA: 80 Hectares of lands reforested; 30,000 tree seedlings raised and planted; 200 community Farmers trained on agro-forestry; 7 youths trained on tree nursery operations; over 5000 community members receive various tree seedlings for planting at household farms.
