Qui sommes-nous

The Lighthouse Project is a not-for-profit in Mumbai that connects working professionals and college students with children from under resourced communities, through one-on-one mentoring in a safe environment. Mentors spend 4 hours a month over an 8 month period building their aspiration levels, developing their life skills and social skills and exposing them to a world outside of their community.

At The Lighthouse Project, we believe that volunteering is one of the most important and transformative experiences one can witness. We started our program in August 2013 with the goal of building a strong culture of volunteering in India.

The Lighthouse Project aims to serve as an accessible, flexible & youth friendly platform where volunteers can be trained & guided as they mentor these children with the goal of improving their confidence levels, interpersonal skills & equipping them with critical life skills.

Each mentor is paired with a child based on gender, location & interests. Mentors plan activities & excursions based on mutual interests & spend a minimum of 4 hours per month over 8 months

Our Programme
Our pilot project saw 30 street children being mentored by 30 mentors over the span of 8 months. In 2014, we expanded to 100 children and 100 mentors, working with children in partnership with Apne Aap Women´s Collective that supports girl children in Mumbai´s red light district, and Akanksha Foundation that works with BMC schools to impart quality education. This year we look to expand to 380 mentors and 380 children across 5 locations with our most recent NGO partner, Muktangan.

Focus areas:
Initiative and Self Direction:
• Self Awareness
• Self Management
Relationships and Communication:
• Social Awareness
• Relationship Skills
Critical Thinking and Decision Making
• Ability to Think Critical
• Responsible Decision Making

Currently we work in 5 areas in Mumbai, largely with street children, children from slum communities and girls from Mumbai´s red light district (Kamathipura).
