Qui sommes-nous
Watabaran is a company in Nepal working with fair trade. Since its foundation in 2001, it recycles paper and produces Christmas cards, calender, handmade business cards and gifts for organisations and companies all over the world. Its products are developed in a close collaboration with swedish designers. Together, they work to create products, that are unique, useful and at the same time helps its customers strengthen their ethical profile.
Some of Watabaran's main goals are to create employment opportunities for women, low-caste, and orphans in Nepal while protecting the environment, that means employment opportunities for discriminated groups, a cleaner environment and a fairer trade policy.
Watabaran represents environmental sustainability and good work conditions. All employees are joint owners and their salaries are well above average, sufficient to pay for their children's education. Watabaran also guarantees paid maternity, health insurance, trade union rights and continued education.
Its wishes are to create a positive development in the area where they live and an educational atmosphere in work where everyone can grow. Since they are all partners (joint owners), everyone participates in decisions and shares the responsibility. They invest a lot in education because not all of them have finished an education, and it is a necessary basis for the company to develop from. Everyone participates in English and computer classes - a necessity to reach the international market and manage customer relations. Further, they specialize in different areas of expertise, from economy and marketing to digital design and production techniques.
Education and influence are not only important - it's profitable. Every rupee and every hour they've spent on education and democratic influence has paid off within six months, through better products and communication, more motivation and new ideas.
Their mission is, working ethically is profitable. It's not solely about creating an attractive image outwards, but also about building a positive business culture and motivational internal processes in the organization.
Björn Söderberg is the dedicated founder of Watabaran and Fair Enterprise Network. He primarily shares his own experiences as an entrepreneur in Nepal and Sweden, through dialogues and workshops.
For other net participants we can offer an expert guidance through trained staff, deliver a lecture and establish new contacts in the following fields: fair trade, entrepreneurship and Nepal.
